Making New Years Resolutions Stick

Happy New Year friends !

We have a new year and a new decade. Yep, I am old enough to count decades now !

So we have new beginnings, new goals, and new commitments !!! The problem is that 80% of resolutions don’t last past the middle of February. How can we assure ourselves of victory with our new goals? Nature has a great lesson for us.

In order for the caterpillar to go from captive crawling to flying freely it has to get rid of its old ways and methods in order to make way for the new ways and habits. The caterpillar literally dies to the old in order to create the new. So the first thing we need to do is die to old habits, old ways and replace those activities, habits, and thoughts. The catch is that we can’t just get rid of the old way of doing things; we have to replace it with something better. It’s simply an exchange. Instead of saying, “I am NOT going to do this or that anymore,” we would instead say, “I AM going to do this in place of what I was doing.” For example: Instead of thinking I am NOT going to eat that fattening food, you start saying I am GOING to eat healthy food!  Using this process, you now have positive reinforcement for what you have eliminated.

Secondly, it is essential to intentionally make no provision to fulfill the old desires. You can’t eat fattening foods late at night if you don’t have any in the house.

Lastly habits are created one day at a time. Just get through each day! Don’t worry about the weekend, just take care of today, then tomorrow and when the weekend arrives it will be easier.

So lock in your New Years resolution:

  1. Figure out what you want instead and focus on that. Photos help
  2. Do whatever is necessary to block the old habits
  3. Take it one day at a time. Celebrate of each day with a mark on your calendar
