Most people say never assume. When you assume you it makes an “ASS out of U and ME“. I BEG TO DIFFER! There are 5 assumptions I believe are essential to help us understand people we disagree with. Weather they are true or not they are extremely helpful. 

I ASSUME:


1. PEOPLE DO WHAT MAKES SENSE TO THEM.    

Not you, THEM! It may not make any sense to you, but it certainly does to them.    A guy robs a bank. This makes NO SENSE to me but it does to the guy robbing the bank. If it didn’t, he wouldn’t do it!

2. PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO FAIL    

Who gets started with anything and says, “I think I’ll start this task or project and see if I can fail.” Maybe they made some wrong choices, maybe they simply need to learn to make better decisions. 

3. PEOPLE WANT TO GROW.      

Who wants to be worse off 5 years from now than they are today? Who wants to be wearing the same clothes 5 years from today?  Who wants their production or sales to be the same 5 years from today?

4. PEOPLE WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.    

Who doesn’t want to make a difference? I think everybody would love to make a difference if they thought they could.     The problem is too many people don’t think they can.  They have grown up hearing, “Who do you think you are? You could never do that. You’re not smart enough, good enough, or talented enough”.   The 5th assumption can make all the difference in the world to create confidence in somebody to move in the right direction.

5. PEOPLE NEED TO BE ENCOURAGED    

Everybody needs to be encouraged! When I talk to large groups of people who are in the top 1% income bracket worldwide, I love to ask them this question: “Have you been encouraged TOO MUCH lately?” In all my years talking to tens of thousands of people all over the world, I have never once had anybody say yes. I’ve been encouraged way too much. Please stop, no more today.  

Listen, if the top one percenters need encouragement, what does that say about the rest of the world? I make these assumptions about everybody, and I hope they are as helpful to you as they have been for me!
